Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the United States. She's worked as an editor since the year 1995. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency the website which includes videos and comments on portrayals of women in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are depicted in popular media. Destroying stereotypes about women are the main goals of her work. However, Sarkeesian also highlights issues related to specifically targeted harassment online against women and for other groups which are left out. With a master's in social and political thought at York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public presenter and has presented speech at the TEDxWomen Festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She has been interested in gender issues and feminism at a young time. In 2009, while in university, she created her Feminist Frequency web site. It was a girl determined to make a series of web videos to examine the how gender is represented in games. However, she became victimized by online harassment. It was not enough to halt her. It actually made her more committed to being a feminist and a media critic. Her notable contributions to the feminist field have been recognized by numerous awards.
