Due to her father's work as a diplomat, the family frequently traveled around the globe and lived in various countries like Germany, Japan and Greece. After arriving in Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In the autumn of 1980, she began attending the University of Texas at Austin. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in theatre in that same year. Harden was admitted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, in 1988, in order to receive her MFA.
